The record

Our history

The club began as a standing Friday-night fixture between six players and one board, and now fills eight boards twice a week.

What follows is the record of how that happened — the moves, the competitions, and the decisions that shaped how the club plays today.

Timeline

  1. February 2024Founding

    The first evening

Six players and a single second-hand board in a borrowed back room. The evening was meant to be a one-off; it became a standing Friday fixture that has not been missed since.

  2. May 2024Founding

    A constitution and a name

With numbers past twenty, the group agreed a short constitution, a name, and a rule that any dispute at a board is settled by the written rules rather than the loudest voice.

  3. September 2024Competition

    The first club championship

The inaugural singles championship drew fourteen entrants and was played over one long Saturday on two boards. It has been held every year since.

    Move to the Club House

The club took a permanent room of its own for the first time, with space for four boards left set up between sessions — the change that let casual practice happen at all.

  5. April 2025Competition

    The doubles league begins

A season-long doubles league was introduced to give newer members regular competitive play without the pressure of a knockout draw. Pairs are fixed for the season.

  6. August 2025Growth

    Fifty members

Membership passed fifty. A second weekly session was added to take the pressure off Friday nights, and a third followed within the month.

  7. December 2025Competition

    The handicap format

The Winter Handicap was introduced, starting stronger players a piece or two down based on the season's standings. It was won at the first attempt by a member in her first year.

  8. March 2026Growth

    Coaching for beginners

Regular beginners' evenings started, built around the rules that most often cause arguments: striker placement, when the queen may be taken, and what covering actually requires.

  9. June 2026Home

Eight boards in the main hall

The club expanded into the main hall, taking capacity to eight boards and making it possible to run a full tournament in a single weekend.

    The rules, written down

The club published its reference version of the rules so that every board settles a dispute the same way — the handbook this site is built around.
